We Want the Perfect Door and We Want It Now

First impressions are important; long after you’ve met someone, the years to come as you continue your relationship with them, what they thought and felt in those initial moments after meeting you will shape how they see and feel about you. That’s why we place so much stress on appearance in our society; the way you look is typically the most influential factor in someone’s impression of you. Similarly, when it comes to your home, the entry door is going to be what shapes a guest’s first impression of your home – and of everything inside, including you!

Really, What is a Door?

Doors are one of the most important elements of your home. They regulate the traffic from one space to another, one room to the next, and they indicate when one space changes into a new, different space. They are beginnings and ends. Doors also create privacy for us within our home by delineating the boundaries between “my space” and “your space.” Indeed, it can surprise many just how important a part of their life doors are, but once you realize how often you look at, approach, and use a door, you will realize how important it is to have high-quality doors installed in your home.

The entry door is, obviously, the most important door of all. It is the point at which the outside world becomes the inside world, and where public becomes private – where you can plant your feet and say, “This is my space, and what I say goes.”

Selections Abound

Finding the right entry door for your home can be difficult. It has to fit not only the doorway itself, but the architecture, design, and look of your home, your lawn or property, and your interior as well (since you’ll be seeing that door from the inside as well). A door that doesn’t suit the home will stick out to everyone who sees it, a glaringly poor design choice that can ruin the home’s façade and create a bad first impression.

So it isn’t unreasonable that you take special care in selecting an entry door for your home. After all, you’re going to have to look at it regularly. Many people choose to simply install a wood door followed up by a screen storm door made out of aluminum or metal. This is probably one of the most unattractive – and least durable – choices you can make as far as your entryway is concerned.

Material Matters

Instead, you should consider using fiberglass – or better yet, steel – for your door. Wood is a notoriously weak material; after all, it’s organic, it was cut out of a tree, and there are many insects that like to get into it, not to mention how wood reacts to a variety of environmental factors (snow, rain, and sun can all warp and distort the wood). Fiberglass, on the other hand, can be made to look like a traditional wood door while still using modern scientific techniques to be especially resistant to denting, splitting, cracking, and warping.

Fiberglass doors are also resistant to rot when compared to most other door materials, especially those doors offered by Banner Exteriors, whose Signet and Heritage line of fiberglass doors are well-known for lasting quality and classic beauty. If you’re looking for a particularly durable, but nevertheless durable material, Banner Exteriors’ Legacy brand steel doors are also quite strong, not to mention energy efficient, as they are great at keeping heat or cold contained within your home, rather than “breathing” it all out as a wood or aluminum door often does.

The Key to a Good Home

You will be faced with many more choices when it comes to renovating – or designing for the first time! – your home’s exterior. Everything from the windows to the siding to the roof, chimney or vents, sidewalk, decks, and garage will require a keen eye and a sense of design that is rare today. The feature that ties it all together, though – the thing that is most important in a home’s exterior design – is the entry door. That is what everyone’s eyes will be drawn to, and it is the aspect of the house we inevitably interact with the most.

As such, it is important for any homeowner intent on having a handsome house to pay special attention to their entry door selection. Using strong materials that will last in their beauty for some time to come is critical to that choice. Otherwise you’re just asking to have to replace it with something better and more beautiful in a few years anyway!
